DCA KIDS ART SUMMER FUN SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

            Registration is now being accepted for the Dorchester Center for the Arts children’s summer art classes and camps. All classes are one week in length, and half day as well as full day sessions are offered. Discounts are given to DCA members, and scholarships are available.

SESSION ONE – FULL DAY SESSION – JUNE 27-JULY 1

            The first full-day session will be held June 27-July 1. The program is for children ages 6 and up and young people will participate in clay, basket weaving and collage classes. Lunch breaks and snack times will be included in the schedule. “Animal Fun with Clay” will be taught by Betsy Whitman and students will create fish, rabbits, cats and turtles all out of clay. “Creative Basket Weaving” will be taught by Heidi Wetzel and students will use unique materials to weave into the designs. Students are encouraged to bring their own shells, beads and other found objects.  “Story Color Collage” will be taught by Patti Logan. Participants will design and create a collage telling his or her story.

SESSION TWO – FULL DAY SESSION – JULY 11-15

            Young people enrolling in Session Two will participate in mixed media and clay. Lunch breaks and snack times will be included. “Mixed Media” will be taught by Karla Gleason. Participants will create frescos and drapo dazzle flags and will also learn drawing and painting techniques. “Unique Handbuilding and Wheel Throwing with Clay” will be instructed by Kay Jones. Students will create Egyptian canopic jars.

SESSION THREE – FULL DAY SESSION – JULY 25-29       

            Session Three will focus on Native American art. Lunch breaks and snack times are included. Jackie Wheeler will instruct “Native American Kachina Symbols.” The afternoon class will be “Native American Crafts” taught by Karla Gleason. Students will make burlap weavings, ceramic jewelry and totems.

            All full-day sessions will run from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Monday through Friday. Fees are $115 for DCA members, $130 for non-members; and students should bring their own lunch and a beverage.

HALF-DAY SESSION – PRESCHOOL ART—JULY 5-8

            Preschool art half-day sessions are being presented for children ages 3-6.  “Preschool Creative Kaleidoscope” will be taught by Karla Gleason the week of July 5-8. (No class will be held on the July 4 holiday.) Students will cut, paste, glue and create new projects. The class is held from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon and fees are $50 for DCA members; $65 for non-members.

HALF-DAY SESSION – PRESCHOOL ART—JULY 18-22

            “Preschool Music Explorations” will be taught by Ginny Mattes July 18-22. Preschoolers will make their own musical instruments and learn to play them. The class is held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and fees are $50 for DCA members; $65 for non-members.

HALF-DAY SESSION – PRESCHOOL ART—AUGUST 1-5

            “Cool Clay Animals for the Very Young” will be taught by Betsy Whitman August 1-5. This class is for students ages 4-6 and the children will work with clay to create animals. The class will run Monday-Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 p.m. Fees are $55 for DCA members and $70 for non-members.

WEEK-LONG HALF DAY YOUNG PEOPLE’S ART CLASSES

            “Puppets and Puppet Theater” is for students ages 6 and up, and will be held July 18-22.  Instructor Anne Hynes will help students create their own puppets and by the end of the week they will present a puppet theater show.  The class will run from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m. daily. Fees are $60 for DCA members; $75 for non-members

            “Dragons, Wizards and Magical Lanterns” is for children ages 8 and up and will be held August 1-5. Instructor Kay Jones will guide students to create a dragon, a wizard and a lantern. Students will paint their projects and the pieces will be fired and glazed. The class will be held from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. daily and costs are $60 for DCA members; $75 for non-members.

            “Jewelry Fun—Beyond the Basics” is for children 8 years and older and will be held August 8-12. Led by Anne Hynes, new students will learn the basic techniques and more experienced class members will learn new techniques. The class will run from 10:00 a.m. to 12 noon daily and fees are $60 for DCA members; $75 for non-members.

            “Drawing for the More Advanced Artist” is for students ages 9 and up and will be held August 8-12. Teaching the class will be Charles Ross and instruction will focus on drawing with colored pencils. Various aspects of color, line and composition will be explored. The class will be held from 1:00 – 3:00 p.m. daily and fees are $60 for DCA members and $75 for non-members.
