Historical Society Offers Discount On House Tour Tickets

Queen Anne’s County Historical Society is offering discounted advance-purchase tickets for its 2010 Holiday Historic House Tour on Saturday, December 11. Six homes in Centreville will be open for tours from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

As an added attraction, the Historical Society is partnering with Crossroads Community this year to offer visitors readings from Civil War soldiers’ yuletide journals and letters from the front. Presentations of “Ought It Not Be A Merry Christmas?” by acclaimed living history interpreter Myra Reichart will take place at 104 Kidwell Bed and Breakfast, one of the homes on the tour, at 10:30 a.m., and 12:30 and 2:30 p.m.

Other houses on the holiday tour include Tucker House, Wright’s Chance, Kennard House, Kendall House and Ozmon House. Fresh cider and cookies will be served at Wright’s Chance. All will be decorated for the holidays, many in traditional Victorian style.

Cille Cumings, owner of Dutch Blooms Special Events in Chestertown, has volunteered her services for Crossroads Community to decorate 104 Kidwell. Popcorn and cranberries, dried fruit and spun glass were all hallmarks of Victorian holiday décor and will be featured along with table-top decorated trees, which became popular during the time of Queen Victoria.

Volunteers to help with the Holiday House Tour are welcome. Those interested may call Doris Pullman at 410-758-1578 or Ellen Norman at 410-758-3047.

Tickets for the event are $25 per person and include both the House Tour and presentation. When purchased in advance at the Historical Society office at Tucker House, 124 South Commerce Street in Centreville, there is a $5 discount on a second ticket when one is purchased at full price.

The Historical Society is open Wednesdays from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and on Saturday, December 4, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for advance sales.

Tickets also may be reserved by calling the Queen Anne’s County Historical Society at 410-758-3010 or by email at qachistorical@verizon.net. Tickets will be available the day of the event at Tucker House and Wright’s Chance in Centreville. Proceeds benefit both the QAC Historical Society and Crossroads Community. Summer sailing classes offered at CBMM

Kids can explore the Miles River and learn maritime skills in the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum’s (CBMM) summer sailing program, where new sailors and old salts gain the confidence to sail a small boat in a fun, safe, and encouraging environment.

Weekly classes are available June 11 through August 3 for participants 8 years of age and older, and offer instruction for sailors at basic, intermediate and advanced sailing levels. The daily classes include limited classroom instruction and three hours of on-the-water experience.

Participants learn sailing and teambuilding skills including water safety, rigging, boat handling and docking. The week ends with a family picnic and awards ceremony, where the students’ accomplishments are celebrated. Pre-registration is needed, with a museum member cost of $200, or $225 for non-members.
