Identifying the Most Addictive Prescription Drugs

We've all heard that many prescription drugs can become addictive. In fact, many legal prescription drugs can be just as addictive (if not more so) as hardcore illegal drugs such as heroin and cocaine. Some of the most addictive prescription drugs on the market today include:

Pethidine
Also known as Demerol, pethidine is in the opioid classification of drugs. Because of the rapid onset of pethidine it's more likely to be abused than other prescription opioids. Side effects include hypotension (low blood pressure), respiratory system problems, and dizziness. For those who are chronically addicted to pethidine, convulsive seizures are a big risk, as are chest pains, tremors, and fainting.

Oxycodone
Probably one of the most well known, and publicized addictive drugs, Oxycodone is a semi-synthetic opioid. Generally prescribed for pain that is mild to intense, it is highly addictive. The side effects are quite severe, and can include tremors, an irregular heartbeat, vomiting, and itching and/or redness of the skin.
Fentanyl
Fentanyl is a synthetic narcotic analgesic drug that has a very quick onset and a very short duration. This makes it very easy to get addicted to. Illegal use of Fentanyl began in the 1970s, and today a single dose on the black market can go for $20 to $80. Fentanyl is even showing up as "lollipops" on the black market, which make it particularly dangerous for an unsuspecting person (especially children) to run across. Side effects include hallucinations, respiratory depression, and aphasia (the inability to speak, read, or write). In addition, there have been several deaths due to overdose of Fentanyl.

Adderall
Another one of the most well known drugs. Sold legally in the US and Canada only, it's estimated that Adderall is the #1 most abused prescription drug. Adderall is commonly used to treat Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), and is commonly abused by college students. Why are college students abusing a ADHD drug? Simply because it allows them to better focus their energy and is widely known as the "study drug" of choice. In fact, Adderall has even been legally prescribed to young children who are having a hard time in school. Side effects include a fast heart rate and low blood pressure. Adderall has been blamed in the death of at least 12 children due to these side effects.

Help For Those Addicted
If you notice someone "doctor shopping" (going to several different doctors for prescriptions) the chances are almost 100% that they are addicted to some type of drug. Intense mood swings, changes in personality, changes in skin tone/color and the want to be alone are also signs that someone may be addicted.

Thankfully, there's a lot of help out there for those who are addicted. Everything from local and regional support groups, hospitals, and professional counseling, are all easily and readily available. With that said, remember you can only help those who want to help themselves. If you know someone who is addicted to prescription drugs, they have to be willing to make the change for themselves, no one else can do it for them.
