Unique instructional art opportunities are being offered at DCA in October. A variety of mediums are available and newcomers are welcome.

Oil Painting for Beginners and Intermediates - Taught by Tom Ryan

Students will learn to paint with oils in this class that is suitable for beginners or students continuing to perfect their skills. Beginners learn the fundamentals of still life painting including color, composition, form, and materials, while intermediate students hone existing skills and explore more complex challenges. More advanced students will complete finished, professional quality work. The session is held Monday mornings, 9 a.m. – noon and will run for six weeks, beginning October 1.  Fees are $95 members, $135 non-members.

Discovering the “Know How” of Marine & Landscape Oil Painting – Taught by Mary Ekroos

Learn the “know how” of creating a painting from your own photos. Students will be shown: how to compose a painting using basic elements in their subjects; how to use light and color; the importance of linear and atmospheric perspectives and how to understand what they see.  Basic principles of drawing will be reviewed. The class is oriented toward marine and landscape oil painting and is open to students at all levels of painting experience. A supply list is available. The class will meet for four weeks beginning Monday, October 8. Fees are $195 for DCA members; $235 fro non-members.

Creating Sets, Whimsical Teapots and CupsTaught by Kay Jones

In this one-day workshop, students will learn hand-building and wheel throwing techniques to make functional pottery. Glaze application procedures will also be included in the class.  The workshop will be held on Friday, October 26 from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Students should being a lunch. The fee is $45 and all supplies are included.

Your Life Stories in PrintTaught by Carol Feierabend

Participants will use photographs to draw roadmaps of their lives and learn how to create text to go with them. Sessions include memory map, learning techniques to stimulate the process of writing, learning how to enliven your stories, and gentle critiquing. Students will design, edit and have the opportunity to print their book. Class size is limited. The eight week session will begin on Monday, October 1 with the class running from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. Fees are $95 for DCA members; $135 for non-members.

Screen Painting for Beginners and BeyondTaught by Sharon Gilroy

This class will teach beginning and intermediate students the basic folk art techniques of painted window screens. Students must bring their own screens. The class meets for 4 weeks beginning Tuesday, October 9 with sessions running from 10:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Fees are $60 for members; $100 for non-members.

Beginning Tap for AdultsTaught by Sharon Gilroy

Students will receive tap instruction in a low stress environment. The class begins Tuesday, October 2 and meets from 6:00-7:00 p.m. Fees are $75 for members; $115 for non-members.      

Cuff Style BraceletTaught by Jennie Seifert

This one-day only class will allow students to create a one-of-a-kind Viking cuff style bracelet made of copper wire and glass beads. Participants will lean creative wire wrapping techniques and no special jewelry making skills are required. The class will be held on Friday, October 5 from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., and students should bring a lunch. The class is $25 plus a $35 supply fee payable to the instructor.

Frog Bowls and DishesTaught by Betsy Whitman

Participants will create a small bowl or butter dish embellished with a miniature frog. The class will meet for one evening only on Friday, October 12 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. The fee is $15 and all supplies are included.
