Get Ready to Bake! GINGERBREAD HOUSE CONTEST!

Dorchester Center for the Arts (DCA) invites community members to enter their Gingerbread House Contest for the holidays. They are looking for creative works that will be displayed at the Center from December 1-15.  Both children and adults are encouraged to enter.

Guidelines for entries are as follows:                                               

  • The mounting board for the entries must be no larger that 20” x 20” for adults; no larger than 15” x 15” for children                                                          
  • Everything on the display that is visible (other than the mounting board) must be edible. Non-edible interior supports that cannot be seen may be used.
  • Creations must be at least 50% gingerbread.
  • Entry fee: $10.00 children (under age 17), $8.00 for DCA members; $15 for adults, $13 for DCA members.

The houses will be judged for overall appearance, originality, imagination, use of materials, design execution and holiday spirit. Ribbons will be awarded, and community members are encouraged to vote by December 15 for the People’s Choice award.

All entries will be sold in a silent auction to benefit DCA. Auction winners can pick up houses on December 17.

To enter, please bring the completed houses to Dorchester Center for the Arts by Saturday, December 1. Entry forms are available at the Center or online at dorchesterarts.org. For more information, call 410-228-7782.

Second Saturday on tap in downtown Cambridge

Brand new store, free gallery receptions, late shopping hours with special sales, and much more

September’s Second Saturday festivities in Cambridge on Sept. 8 promise an evening of fun gallery hopping, great shopping, fine dining, and live music along four adjacent blocks of the downtown area. Many shops of all kinds, art galleries, and artist studios will be staying open late for the popular monthly event, which starts at 5 pm and also features dining and entertainment at restaurants in the downtown area.

Shops will be showcasing just-arrived fall merchandise and offering great closeout deals on summer inventories. Most discounts and other special promotions are available in the shops not just in the evening, but all day long.  Be sure to stop by downtown's newest shop, Choptank Charlie's Emporium, at 516 Poplar Street. The shop offers everything from window treatments to tuxedo rentals to gifts.

Art lovers will be able to enjoy meet-the-artist receptions and enjoy free refreshments as they make the rounds of the galleries.

Rides, games, cotton candy, funnel cakes and fried oreos are sure to bring a smile to everyone’s face! 
 
Wristband Nights are Tuesday, June 5, and Thursday, June 7.  Ride all the rides for one price, with a wristband!
 
This is our biggest fundraiser of the year and helps us pay for projects like the Senior Prom and Christmas from the Heart!

hula hoop contest and several others.

St. Michaels Running Festival: A Day of Fun & Wellness

The first annual St. Michaels Running Festival will be held in historic St. Michaels, MD, on Saturday, May 19, 2012. The Festival activities will begin at 7:30 a.m. with an opening  ceremony, followed by a rolling start for a 10K run, the USATF certified half marathon, and a 5K run/walk. The races and walks are open to people of all fitness levels and abilities.   The routes will include the streets of historic St. Michaels and its waterfront communities, the Martingham golf community, and the newly paved rails to trails nature path. Race timing and management support for the race is provided by Pacers Events, Inc. from Arlington, VA.

Each race and walk will be followed by an awards ceremony.  Live music, featuring BritishMania, an authentic Beatles Tribute Band and the local band, "Them Eastport Oysterboys” and DJ Groundhog, will round out this daylong family-oriented festival. Children will be entertained with a moon bounce, face painting, music and dancing. Eastern Shore hospitality will be served up with signature pit beef and steamed crabs. At the end of the day, massage therapists will provide sports massages to tired athletes.

Call to Artists for Handmade from the Heart

 

Artists who live on Maryland’s Eastern Shore or have taken part in past Handmade from the Heart shows are invited to apply to Evergreen Cove’s 12th annual gift and art sale, to be held on December 7 and 8, 2012 at The Historical Society of Talbot County Auditorium.  

The application form is available at www.evergreencove.org or by request at 410-819-3395.  The deadline for receipt of applications is July 1, 2012.

Handmade from the Heart combines fundraising with a celebration of local artists, including popular past artists and highlighting new artists. The show features handmade items such as jewelry, pottery or ceramics, textiles, stained glass, woodwork, works on paper, metals, and mixed media.

ST. MICHAELS COMMUNITY CENTER'S FASHION SHOW, TEA AND SILENT AUCTION

 

INN AT PERRY CABIN HOSTS FOURTH ANNUAL ST. MICHAELS COMMUNITY CENTER'S FASHION SHOW, TEA AND SILENT AUCTION
  
Once again, the Inn at Perry Cabin will open its doors and host the St. Michaels Community Center's Fourth Annual Fashion Show, Tea and Silent Auction on Sunday, June 3, 2012. Guests will enjoy a delightful afternoon Tea, complete with tea sandwiches, scones, tea cakes and sweets on the beautiful veranda of The Inn at Perry Cabin, weather permitting. The Fashion Show will feature attire from the Chesapeake Bay Outfitters and Charisma and jewelry pieces will be shown by Guilford and Company, Silver Linings and DBS Jewelers. Businesses from St. Michaels and individual donors are donating lovely items for the Silent Auction.
  
The St. Michaels Community Center's mission is to strive to fill the unmet needs of the Bay Hundred community. Proceeds from this event will support the SMCC programs which include free weekly luncheons and activities for seniors, free holiday dinners, clothes drives, teen nights, after school programs and summer camps for children. In addition, SMCC sponsors the Summer Concert Series in Muskrat Park, the annual summer community theater production, holiday events, movie nights, family events, computer and adult classes and the very popular bus trips throughout the year.

CBMM’s Frederick Douglass Day activities announced

The Frederick Douglass Honor Society (FDHS) and the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) are partnering once again to present Frederick Douglass Day from 10am to 4pm on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at the museum’s waterfront campus in St. Michaels, MD.

“Learning from the past, educating for the future” is the theme for this year’s event, which features exhibits about Douglass’ life and work, genealogy workshops, cooking demonstrations, dance, live music, regional foods, and activities for children to learn about the cultural diversities established in the Bay region’s early heritage. Shipbuilding techniques used by Douglass will also be demonstrated at the boatshop.
