History Comes Alive is back!

The Dorchester County Historical Society at La Grange Plantation has announced the return of this interactive history education series.  The first one of the 2011 – 2012 school year is scheduled for Saturday, October 22, 2011, beginning at 10 am and is titled The American Civil War.  The program will last about two hours.

Children aged 6 – 12 will engage first in setting up a military camp site.  Then, they will  take part in basic Civil War exercises and learn about weapons, uniforms and camp food of the era.

Maritime Monster Mash

Maritime Monster Mash comes to CBMM October 21

From 6 to 9pm on Friday, October 21, visit the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum (CBMM) in St. Michaels, MD for some spooky family fun. The event includes judging for the best costumes, games, and ‘trick-or-treats’ at various exhibits. Enjoy live music, roving entertainers, magicians, and costumed maritime monsters, featuring Chessie, the legendary sea monster said to live in the Chesapeake Bay.

The cost is $10 for CBMM members, and $15 for non-members, with children 12 and under admitted for free. For more information, visit the museum in St. Michaels or online at cbmm.org.

Sing Along with Sam at the St. Michaels Library

On Tuesday, August 9, at 2:00 p.m., in the St. Michaels branch of the Talbot County Free Library, Singin’ Sam Eddington will present a program of songs and music for children of all ages.  All library programs are free and open to the public, but children do need to be pre-registered to attend this program.  For more information, call the library at 410-745-5877, or visit www.tcfl.org.

Fun with Food at the Easton Library

Pirate Mania

A vast ye land lobbers!!Catch the wave of pirate mania sweeping the country as the Historic Elk Landing Foundation is invaded by pirates of the Chesapeake!  On Saturday, June 11ththe pirate invasion will include the Salty Dogs pirates and singing group.  Specializing in familiar pirate songs of the 17thand 18thcenturies, the Salty Dogs also present non-singing buccaneers who will join you in conversation.  But keep a sharp eye out and a firm hold on both your valuables and your loved ones for these are pirates ya know!! 

Admission is $3 for anyone 12 and over, $1 for anyone under 12. The grounds open at 10.  The Pirates invade at 11!  Hot dogs and bottled water will be available for purchase at $1 each.  This is a shine or rain event with indoor facilities which are handicapped accessible. Step back in time with a Friday Night Cruise-In and Outdoor Movie.  Spend a summer evening strolling the streets of Downtown Denton and enjoying the classic cars parked along Market Street. There will also be DJ spinning oldies tunes.  At dusk, there will be an outdoor movie, so bring your lawn chairs and blankets!  This month's movie is The Gumball Rally.

Talbot Library’s Summer Reading Program Offers Prizes

This year’s Summer Reading Program at the Talbot County Free Library offers great prizes in return for great reading all summer long.  Children and teens can win instant prizes and qualify for even bigger prizes by keeping track of the books they read this summer. 

This year’s prizes include free tickets to Orioles and Shorebirds games, a family 4-pack of free passes to the Maryland Science Center, and coupons redeemable at Dunkin Donuts and Chili’s.  “One World, Many Stories” is the summer reading program theme for children this year, and “You Are Here” is the theme for Grades 6 – 12. 

Families planning a trip away from home this summer are invited to take Sneaks, the library’s summer reading mascot, along with them.  Images of Sneaks can be picked up at the library.  Photographs taken of Sneaks and his friends on vacation will be posted all summer long on a special wall in the library.

Big Band Night at the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum

Bring your family, guests, lawn chairs and blankets for an evening of music, dancing under a tent and fireworks under the stars in historic St. Michaels. Featuring the 17-piece band The Rhythm Doctors, the Chesapeake Bay Maritime Museum will host the Talbot Bank-sponsored Big Band Night on Saturday, July 2 from 7- 10 pm. The rain date for the concert and the St. Michaels fireworks is Sunday, July 3.

The live concert will be performed from the Museum’s Tolchester Beach Bandstand. Admission for Big Band Night is $5 for Museum members ($10 for non-members), with children under 12 free. Guests entering after 8:45 pm for the fireworks will be charged $2 for admission. With a variety of food, non-alcoholic beverages and desserts offered, guests can also bring their own picnics to campus.
