Megan Huddleston to Perform in Cambridge

Meghan1846 was a relatively quiet year for the great commonwealth of Virginia.  Antebellum was in full swing and the tobacco crop was especially burly.  King Cotton called for his pipe and fiddlers, three.

As things drifted along just like the lazy Rivanna, the winds brought word of a renegade gypsy child born in the blue hills.  Raised by a pack of wild pugs, with a shock of hair – red - like the fires of hell.

Little did the natives know that the Great Huddleston Prophecy had been fulfilled.

Unto the Old Dominion was born a savior (well, singer/songwriter) with a nearly embarrassingly naked, honest voice and an electric guitar strung with her own guts. In the words of Hank Jr. she "could make folks feel what she felt inside." Which was seldom pleasant or friendly and could, therefore, strike or slice a nerve in whoever dared to listen.

Megan Huddleston has since grown into a thirty-something dynamo, her red hair now long and flowing, shining with a light that comes from within, her tattoos straight out of a stevedore’s scrapbook.

Megan's songs echo the smack-down murder ballads of Appalachia and the intrepid, menacing electricity of the 50’s first rockers.  Her latest offering, Lucky You, seems tuned to a long lost am station, one that comes along on the dial at just the right moment.  That moment where there is no time, when autumn leaves crunch under foot and the bitterness of a broken heart is turned into a rock&roll ring toss at the state fair.<!-- pagebreak -->

Cracklins & fatback with a Balkan swagger.  A Smoky Mountain Christmas where the ghosts of the Crickets have a table reserved for the midnight feast. Unaffected, socially graceless, true to her friends and her art, and a threat to coffeehouse sissies on XM satellite radio.  Miss Megan "Molly Smoky" Huddleston should be considered over her council, Garth Brooks and the Louvin Brothers, for your next musical pleasure moment.

But when your day is done and you are tucked away snug in your bed, listening to her music low and on repeat, sleep with one eye open. She's a biter.

Check out her music at  her Website.  Her band, Mr. Baby will perform at Scoop Station in Cambridge on August 15, 2009. Get details from Scoop Station.

Beware of Allstate Motor Club - and their salespeople!

Things that annoy me:

  1.  telemarketers
  2.  liars
  3.  manipulators
  4.  shady business practices

Put them all together and you get my recent experience with Allstate Motor Club. I usually don't even answer the phone when I know it's a solicitor. But we have Allstate Insurance, and I really didn't pay attention to the words following Allstate on the Caller ID. They're counting on that.

So I made the mistake of answering my phone, and immediately realized this was NOT my insurance agent calling with a question. Instead the salesperson immediately began reading from the script, talking fast and apparently not pausing for extraneous things - like air. Sometimes I let them finish their spiel, but I was busy with sick children and doctors and after a couple of minutes I interrupted to say, "No, thank you."  They immediately talked more, going into Spiel #2 without hesitation. Again, I interrupted. "No, thank you." Then I hung up.

That was my second mistake.
